The National Press Photographers Association’s annual Convergence conference, which includes the Multimedia Immersion workshop, Women in Photojournalism seminars and the Visual Journalism seminars, starts early Saturday morning at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.
The coaching staff includes a number of the best multimedia storytellers in the country. I’ll be helping coach videojournalism with Steve Elfers, video director at USA Today, Ben de la Cruz, acting director of video at the Washington Post, Will Yurman and David Stephenson, staff photographer at the Lexington Herald-Leader. For a complete list of coaches, please check out the Convergence website.
In addition to the usual sessions on topics such as storytelling and shooting, Pam Chen, who manages photography and multimedia for the Open Society Institute, will give a seminar titled, Using Music in a Visual Narrative. Last year, she showed some incredible uses of music in presentations she helped create at Mediastorm for National Geographic. Music seems to be one of the most difficult areas for multimedia journalists to venture; when is it appropiate and when is it not? I’ll be addressing these questions in an ethics panel discussion early next week.
According to the Convergence site, there’s still room for participants.
